Allegations have come out this year of 2026 in march about Cesar Chavez. The allegations stated that he sexually abused multiple women during the UFW movement. Ana Murguia and Debra Rojas are two women that told their stories about Cesar. Debra claims that Cesar Chavez sexually abused her for multiple years, from around 1972 to 1977. Ana claims she was only 13 when Cesar sexually abused her.She claims that the assault continued for about four years. Dolores Huerta, who worked beside Cesar, was another woman that told her story.During an interview, she claimed that he sexually assaulted her also, and as a result she was impregnated twice by Cesar.
Since these claims have become public, many of the women that worked, and volunteered in his movement have come forward with claims that he used them for his own sexual gratification. Many of these women have stayed silent for decades, all saying it was due to shame and fear of bashing Cesar’s image and reputation, and having backlash for doing so.And as expected, exactly that happened.
Several cities and states have canceled their yearly celebrations for Cesar Chavez. The California Museum also announced that they would be removing Cesar’s statue from the hall of fame. In Dallas, officials have proposed that March 31 should no longer be considered “Cesar Chavez Day,” but “Dolores Huerta Day”.Others have suggested that March 31 should be “Farm Workers Day,”to still honor the farm workers movement without mentioning Cesar. And now some changes have been made, and March 31 is now “Farm Workers day” in the state of California.
In San Fernando, the city council removed a statue from the Cesar E. Chavez Memorial Park, but before removing the statue, they covered it when the allegations broke loose, stating “In the light of seriousness of the current revelations,as a first step,we are covering the statue while we determine appropriate next steps for its removal. They also stated “At Fresno State, our values are grounded,in dignity, respect, and care for one another. When we become aware of reports of such serious nature, and we must acknowledge weight, and hold space for those that have been harmed.”
To give a student point of view, these allegations have left me confused and worried of what the future holds for myself and other students when it comes to history. This is because me,along with many other students have consistently learned about Cesar over the years, and these allegations leave me wondering if Cesar Chavez will still be the face of the UFW,or if it just ends here and kids will no longer know about the importance of the Farm Workers Movement.
