Many people see AI as unharmful and useful. But that is far from the truth. AI has been used by many students to help them do their work, and many still continue to use it. Many parents overlook this or don’t know that their kid is using it at all. But the problem with this is that students are now left unsupervised with AI.
This is a bad thing because kids are now creating deepfakes. For those of you who don’t know what deepfakes are, deepfakes are pictures, videos, or voice recordings of people doing or saying something that they never did. Deepfakes are often used to humiliate people or bully them. Many schools have reported other students creating fake images and videos of students doing and or saying sexual things. Of course they know it isn’t real themselves but what stops others from believing that?
Especially with AI evolving and looking more realistic it would be hard to figure out who is lying and who isn’t. Many students who have had a deepfake made of them have developed severe anxiety and depression. This is because there is no way to prove that it isn’t real considering the fact that it looks real. Even if the student does get punished the deepfake could still resurface giving students anxiety of when the deepfake might resurface again. “Deepfakes should be illegal for any state. There should be a fine for any AI deepfakes for child pornography,” said a student at RPMS who would like to remain anonymous. Students that have had deepfakes made of them have felt hurt, depressed, and anxious, stated the student. “If half the school already saw it, it could cause them to feel scared and anxious of what their friends and classmates might think and say,” they said.
Parents and adults, please look at what your kids and students are doing, because deepfakes are ruining other kids’ mental health and can possibly destroy their future. But lives aren’t the only things AI is ruining. AI is using up an excruciating amount of water. And before you say “well I don’t use AI that much so that doesn’t apply to me.” Yes it does. Even the shortest conversation with ChatGPT or any AI app uses up 500mls of water! That might not seem like much, but think about it. Approximately 378 million people use AI a day!
That is 189 billion which sums up to 378 million bottles of water. That much water could fill up 37,000 olympic sized pools! If this keeps going you can possibly put our world in danger. So next time you think about using AI think about how harmful it is to the environment. It’s not only taking up an astonishing amount of water from us, but its also polluting our water with additive chemicals.
