As of March 24, 2026, Sora AI is scheduled to shut down on April 26 2026. The app was mainly used for funny AI videos and parodies with other creators. The app is mainly shutting down due to high maintenance costs and very low user count. Open AI, which is the owner of Sora AI, has reportedly burned roughly 1 million dollars daily because of Sora AI. To the company, it is simply not profitable and loses way too much trying to pursue AI video creation.
Sora AI was way less profitable than other AI platforms. Each ten second video reportedly cost around $1.30. ChatGPT, another platform also owned by Open AI, has made around 1.9 billion dollars since the release of Sora AI. On the other hand, Sora AI has only made 1.4 million dollars since its release in late 2024. This is a steep comparison in terms of money and overall usage of Sora AI. Another problem the company faced during its lifetime was how quickly it died after losing popularity. In late September of 2025, The company blew up with over 5 million downloads, but shortly after it began to decline and eventually announced its shutdown.
Because of this shutdown, Sora AI had to cancel their 1 billion dollar business deal with Disney. This deal would have been very massive for both Sora AI and Disney, but because of the announcement, the deal has been canceled. This will make disney have to find a new company to make a deal with.
Overall this shutdown won’t majorly affect the AI community, but it’s safe to say that it is sad to see it go. There were too many user issues and financial issues to keep the company running. As said by Open AI, it was simply too little profit to keep running. This shutdown marks the end of Sora AI and will put the platform to rest.
