What happens in your classroom when the teacher says there is homework. Is it chaos where everyone is mad and it’s crazy or is it calm, and everyone has expected their fate? Do you think homework can be helpful or harmful? I believe whether homework is helpful or hurtful depends on the design and amount. When helpful homework can reinforce classroom learning, developing time management, self-discipline, and preparing students for tests. However, excessive homework can lead to stress, burnout, sleep deprivation, and less time with family and friends, and other activities.
Homework can be helpful for students by reinforcing learning: homework can help students retain information from class and practice skills. It also aids in developing essential life skills such as time management, accountability, and self-discipline. Furthermore, studies suggest a connection between homework and higher test scores, especially middle and high school. Finally it encourages independent learning allowing students to manage their own learning and solve problems independently.
On the other hand, homework can be harmful because it causes stress and burnout. Excessive homework is a good source of stress for many students and can lead to burnout. It also reduces time from other activities. It can take away crucial time from family, social life, extracurriculars, and sleep. This can impact mental and physical health with stress from heavy workloads leading to physical symptoms negatively affecting mental well-being. Also it impacts mental and physical health: stress from heavy workloads can lead to physical symptoms like headaches and stomach problems, as well as negatively affect your mental health. Lastly it can be inequitable: not all students have the same resources needed to complete assignments.
My advice is to not give your students a week’s worth of homework in one night. Teachers giving students too much work can lead to mental and physical exhaustion. Research indicates excessive assignments given to children, particularly younger school-going children, can lead to unhealthy levels of stress.
