In an interview with Ms. Mayorga we learned that, “In recent years, mental health has become one of the most pressing issues among students of 11 to 14 years of age. From 6th to 8th grade, many middle schoolers struggle with stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout. Academic pressure, social expectations, and the uncertainty of the future can take a heavy toll on emotional well-being. Understanding mental health and developing good coping mechanisms are good steps toward building resilience and achieving balance.
Students today face a lot of pressure. We have to study hard, get good grades, and sometimes deal with drama or bullying. Social media can make things worse because we always compare ourselves to others. When we try to do too much or feel like we aren’t good enough, it can cause stress and hurt our mental health and ourselves as a whole.
One big part of mental health is stress. Middle school can be stressful because we’re growing up, people expect more of us, and we are trying to fit in. Some students worry about grades, while others might feel pressure to be popular and do well in sports. It’s important to remember that nobody is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death; about 20% of middle school students reported having seriously considered suicide in the past year. “Doesn’t sound like a lot, but that means in 100 students, about 20 of them tried to harm themselves or think about self-harm. Good mental health helps us focus, learn, and enjoy life. When our mental health is bad, we might feel tired, unmotivated, or angry for no reason. It can even affect our grades. Taking care of our minds is just as important as taking care of our bodies. You can do this by getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, taking breaks, talking to people you trust or even physical activity like playing basketball and social support.
Schools are starting to prioritize student mental health as well. Some schools offer counselors, clubs, or designated days for students to learn about stress management and self-care. This helps students know they aren’t alone and that it’s okay to ask for help.
Student mental health is very important for everyone. We all have feelings, and it’s okay to talk about them or speak up about them. When we take care of our minds, we can do better in school and feel happier. Remember you matter, and your mental health matters too.
